MSc thesis project proposal

Stretchable Electrodes from Metallic- and Nanomaterials

Stretchable Electrodes pave the way towards advanced bio-integrated devices for dynamically moving organs, as they facilitate conformal alignment to enable precise recording of electrophysiological signals and reduce adverse host responses. In addition, the integration of biodegradable materials enables transient implants eliminating the need for extraction surgeries.

The goal of this project is to explore metallic and nanomaterials-based composite systems for stretchable, biodegradable electrodes, as well as their synthesis, fabrication, and characterization.

Assignment

This project is taking place at ECTM and executed to a large share in the EKL facilities.

It will include the following activities:

  • A review of state-of-the-art stretchable and biodegradable electrodes and their fabrication;
  • Synthesis and characterization of novel biodegradable material systems;
  • Cleanroom microfabrication of electrode arrays;
  • Characterization of fabricated electrodes in-vitro;
  • Reporting.

The graduation project will have a total duration of 9 to 12 months.

Requirements

You are an ambitious hands-on master student with a background in material science, biomedical/electrical engineering, or microfabrication. You have an affinity for working in a multi-disciplinary context, including biology, material synthesis and (micro)fabrication. You have good communication skills in English, you are independent and a team player.
